When we open the pantry and we reach for something salty or sweet or processed, our brains believe that that will make us feel good. It is going to make us feel better. It can be extremely hard to resist this perceived source of satisfaction. Perhaps willpower will sometimes work, maybe for a few weeks even, but eventually we find ourselves “giving in” to these cravings.
Of course, the problem is that we give in to our cravings and when we do that, we only get temporary relief. Initially we get a fleeting sense of escape or comfort. It does “work” in the moment to buffer that which we either do not want to feel, or do not know how to feel or maybe that which we do not even know is there.
But soon afterward, we find ourselves feeling those all-too-familiar feelings of shame, regret, remorse, self-loathing, and even physical discomfort at times. In our group “Whole30 for Emotional Eaters” I teach you how to work through these cravings using non-reactivity. You learn how to apply mindfulness to your own experience with food. It is truly possible to be with your cravings without giving in to them. I promise you that you do not need willpower to be able to do this. Willpower is a finite resource that will let you down every time.
Learning how to pause takes commitment. It takes practice. But then you can come from a place of curiosity instead of self-hate about where these cravings are coming from. I teach you how to observe the thoughts, the emotions, the sensations that arise when a craving occurs. You learn how to become like a witness to those cravings without acting on them. With this ability comes the life-changing work of being able to ask yourself from a place of loving kindness, “What is going on in my mind and body? Am I stressed? Am I angry? Am I seeking a distraction? What do I really need right now?”
The amazing thing about this work is that you can come to a place where you ride out the craving. You watch it arrive and you watch it pass, like a cloud floating overhead in the sky. Allowing yourself this pause gives you all your power back. Food no longer has control over you. You can choose your actions with integrity and self-love and ultimately, this allows you to achieve Food Freedom.
Having the power to respond to a craving from a place of peace and kindness instead of self-hate and reactivity is true freedom around food. For anybody who does not know what Whole30 is, or maybe knows what Whole30 is but feels, “I can’t do it because I have this complicated emotional relationship with food.”, I want to make sure you are aware of my upcoming free webinars to help you be successful in Whole30 even though you emotionally eat.
I invite you to join us in our upcoming webinar. Choose either 11:00 am EST on April 18th, or 7:00pm EST on April 22nd; pick the time that works for you. Come live to the Zoom call where you will hear from me exactly what it takes to able to be successful in doing a Whole30, so that you are able to achieve that Food Freedom as well. I will give you the power to make your own decision about whether a Whole30 is right for you, and if it is, how you get through it as an emotional eater.
Registration is open right now for our May 2021 Whole30 that is Exclusively for Emotional Eaters. We will dive into all things emotional eating, including cravings. So, if you know this is the time to do your “diet” differently, then Whole30 for Emotional Eaters is a great option for you. It is NOT a diet. This is a journey into self-exploration around which foods serve you, and which foods do not. It is a coaching journey around healing your emotional relationship with food.
Let me help you find a place where you do not give into your cravings anymore, where you’re able to see the craving, feel it through and not react to it. It truly is possible for you, and I would love to share my system of success with you.
